Thermo Fisher Scientific Honored with 2010 Cygnus Law Enforcement Group Innovation Award
Award Recognizes Thermo Scientific FirstDefender RMX for its Ease-of-Use, Innovative Design and Integration with Tactical Robots
WALTHAM, Mass., (November 3, 2010) Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., (NYSE: TMO), the world leader in serving science, today announced that it has received a 2010 Innovation Award from the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group for FirstDefender RMX, a handheld instrument used for unknown chemical identification. The Innovation Awards recognize outstanding companies who bring to market creative and innovative solutions to help address the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel. This year’s winners were honored at an awards dinner on October 24, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. This is the company’s third Innovation Award for its handheld chemical identification solutions.
“We are honored that the Cygnus Law Enforcement Group has once again recognized our commitment to delivering instruments that can quickly and effectively assess potentially life-threatening situations in the field,” said Doug Kahn, vice president and general manager of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s portable optical analysis business. “In the past, first responders relied on lab-based analysis for chemical identification, which added time, uncertainty and risk to the remediation process. With our suite of handheld chemical identification instruments, including our newest FirstDefender RMX, we empower users to diffuse dangerous situations with a greater level of responder and community safety.”
FirstDefender RMX is a Raman spectrometer designed for law enforcement, bomb squads, homeland security, military, hazmat teams and forensic chemistry personnel. The instrument allows users to quickly identify unknown solid and liquid chemicals from a vast sample library of more than 10,000 pure substances including: explosives, toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare agents, white powders, narcotics, precursors and more. Weighing only two pounds and built to the U.S. military’s specifications for ruggedness, the next-generation instrument extends the point-and-shoot capability with a permanent fixed probe. The instrument can be operated in handheld mode or be attached to the gripper arm of a tactical robot and connected via an RS232 port to enable remote operation and provide users with the ability to more safely execute their response missions.
