Core Use Models
Since the launch of FirstDefender, Ahura Scientific, now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, has been at the forefront of handheld, field-based chemical identification. The company has built on that legacy and now offers products addressing the following core use models:
Identification
Thermo Scientific FirstDefender (Raman) and TruDefender FT (FTIR) are designed for identification of unknown chemicals. This is done by collecting a spectrum from an unknown material and comparing it against an on-board chemical library. The analysis result is a chemical or mixture of chemicals, including detailed chemical information.

Authentication
Thermo Scientific TruScan uses Raman spectroscopy, the same underlying technology as FirstDefender, but is designed for a different purpose. Rather than identifying an unknown, TruScan is designed to authenticate or verify that a known sample is as expected. This is a one-to-one comparison which leads to a PASS or FAIL result.

Screening
Most recently, Thermo Scientific TruScreen for bottled liquid threat applications was introduced. The screening use model is not focused on identifying a substance or confirming its authenticity. Rather, it is designed to quickly screen for particular items of interest – in the case of TruScreen, for potential liquid explosives and precursors. This results in a easily interpreted CLEAR or ALARM result.
