Safe and proper disposal of hazardous materials and chemical waste is of growing concern for communities around the globe. First responders and hazmat remediation agencies need to quickly analyze and identify the contents of unlabeled spilled material and illegally dumped drums. Increasingly complex industrial processes are introducing new hazardous chemical materials that require special disposal and waste treatment facilities that need to test and verify the products they are receiving.
Hazardous waste analysis often involves collecting and analyzing solid or liquid samples from various containment vessels. Tools such as composite liquid waste samplers (COLIWASA) for liquids and scoops, and trowels for solid waste sampling are often used. Onsite preliminary assessment is usually done by visual inspection with further tests conducted offsite or in a nearby laboratory. This can add a tremendous amount of time and expense to the identification and cleanup process.
